Regina T. Riphahn studied economics, business administration, and sociology at the Universities of Cologne, Sussex (U.K.), Bonn, Tennessee, and North Carolina. She received an M.B.A. at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (1990), and a Ph.D. in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for her dissertation on disability retirement among German men (1995). She joined the University of Munich’s economics department in 1995 and completed her post-doctoral habilitation on the dynamics of social assistance dependence in Germany (1999). 2000-2001 she taught at the University of Mainz (Germany) as an Associate Professor of Economic Policy and headed the statistics and econometrics group at the economics department of the University of Basel (Switzerland) (2001-2005). Since April 2005 she holds the chair for Statistics and Empirical Economics at Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany).

Regina T. Riphahn is a fellow of IZA (Institute of Labor Economics, Bonn) and cesifo. She has published in journals such as  Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of Development Economics, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Journal of Human Resources, and Journal of Population Economics. Regina T. Riphahn was awarded several scholarships for studies in England, Spain, Chile, and the United States. She received a Fulbright grant, the University of North Carolina economics department’s Lurcy Fellowship, and in 2000 a prize for the best paper written with the GSOEP data since 1984. She worked at the Central Bank of Chile (1989), The World Bank (1990), and as a research assistant at the Carolina Population Center (1991-1995).

She served on the Swiss council of economic advisors (2002-2005), the council of the European Society of Labour Economists (EALE, 2003-2009), as treasurer of the European Society for Population Economics (ESPE, 2002-2008) and as a council member of the German Economic Association (2005-2016). She is coordinator of the Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics (since 2005). She headed the scientific council of the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (2005-2007), was member of the scientific advisory council of DIW Berlin (2011-2018) and of RWI Essen (2011-2019, chairperson 2015-2019). She is member of the scientific advisory councils of the German Federal Ministry of Economics (since 2007, vice chair since 2019) and the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS, Vienna) (since 2017). She was member of the Wissenschaftsrat (German Council of Science and Humanities) (2008-2014) and chaired its scientific commission (2012-2014). 2014-2020 she was an elected member and the chair of the German Data Forum (Rat für Sozial- und Wirtschaftsdaten). Since 2007 she is member of the German Academy of Sciences – Leopoldina; in 2017 she became the Academy’s vice president. Since 2018 she is member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and of Academia Europaea. 2021-2022 she was designated chair and 2023-2024 she is chair of Verein für Socialpolitik (German Economic Association).
