Peter Welzel studied economics at the University of Augsburg (Diplom 1984) and public administration and economics at Harvard University (MPA 1986). He got his doctoral degree and his post-doctoral habilitation degree from the University of Augsburg and held temporary professorships at the University of Munich and the University of Augsburg. He was a tenured professor for empirical methods at the University of Jena and has held the chair for Industrial Economics and Economic Policy at the University of Augsburg since 2000. His research interests are in the industrial economics of financial services, the microeconomics of risk management, and in international economics. He has published among others in the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Productivity Analysis, Small Business Economics, and Economic Modelling.

Peter Welzel was Chairman of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics (2001-2002, 2011-2015) and Academic Director of the University of Augsburg´s Executive MBA Program (2010-2021). He has been a member of the academic council of the German Economic Association of Business Administration (GEABA) since 2010 and a visiting professor of economics at the Université de Rennes I since 2000. Since 2015 he serves as Vize President at the University of Augsburg, currently responsible for financial strategy and human resources development.
